How to get a transfer code

Short answer

The transfer code (auth code) is issued by whichever registrar the domain is registered with right now. You request it in the account after lifting the transfer lock, and it’s sent to the domain owner’s verified email.

Steps

  1. Sign in to the current registrar’s account — The code is issued by the registrar the domain is registered with right now — not the new one you’re moving to.
  2. Lift the transfer lock — While the transfer lock is on, the code won’t work even if you already have it.
  3. Request the code — The code is sent to the domain owner’s verified email and is valid for a limited time — usually a few weeks.

Note. Transfer codes are only accepted through the new registrar’s account or API — never by email or in support chat: an operator shouldn’t see them.

FAQ

The code isn’t arriving — what should I do?

Check whether it landed in spam and whether the domain owner’s email is verified. If that doesn’t help, contact the current registrar’s support.

Can a domain be transferred without a code?

No, the transfer code is mandatory — it confirms that the domain owner is the one requesting the transfer.
