How to transfer a domain to another registrar

Short answer

Transferring a domain takes four steps: unlock it and get a transfer code (auth code) from the current registrar, submit a request to the new one, confirm the transfer, and wait for it to complete. The site and mail keep working the whole time.

Steps

  1. Unlock it and get the code — In the current registrar’s account, lift the transfer lock and request the transfer code — it’s sent to the domain owner’s email.
  2. Submit a request to the new registrar — Provide the domain and the transfer code. Codes are only accepted through the account or the API — never by email or in support chat.
  3. Confirm the transfer — The domain owner confirms the transfer by email or in the current registrar’s account — this protects against someone else hijacking it.
  4. Wait for it to complete — If no one rejects the transfer, the registry completes it within the set window.

Warning. Don’t turn off auto-renewal at the current registrar until the transfer is complete: if the domain expires mid-process, the transfer can fail.

FAQ

Can I cancel a transfer that’s already started?

While the transfer hasn’t completed, the domain owner can usually reject it in the current registrar’s account.

Can I transfer a domain right after registering it?

No: after registration or a previous transfer, a technical lock prevents a new transfer for a set period — that’s a registry rule, not ours.
