Cyrillic and punycode are two forms of the same domain. We convert both ways and check for mixed alphabets.

Example conversion

Cyrillic → xn--, and back: direction is detected automatically.

кава.укрxn--80aaf4a.xn--j1amh

Punycode is what’s actually stored in DNS; the Cyrillic form is only how it’s shown to a person.

Mixed alphabets

A domain where Cyrillic letters replace similar-looking Latin ones (Latin “a” for Cyrillic “а”, say) is a classic phishing trick. The check shows which alphabets the name is actually made of.

Frequently asked

Why does the browser sometimes show xn--… instead of Cyrillic?

It’s an anti-spoofing measure: if the zone or browser doesn’t trust mixed alphabets in this context, it shows the safe technical form instead of Cyrillic.
